Berber Pyramid Mystery

Archaeologists have explained the mystery of the Berber pyramids.

Berber Pyramid Mystery

Scientists from Algeria have called looting and a long-term ban on research the main reason that the famous tombs of the Berber kings have not yet been studied.

According to, we are talking about 13 stone square tombs located in the territory of Algeria. They are located near the town of Tiaret. It is known that the so-called Jeddars were built in the pre-Islamic period. However, their story is still shrouded in mystery. Scientists have named the reasons for this.

The study of the Jeddars began in the XIX century under the French colonial authorities. In 1865, nine burial sites were explored. However, the following study was conducted only in the 1960s, and only one burial was examined. After Algeria gained independence, excavations ceased.
Last year alone, a group of 20 archaeologists gained access to the sites. Scientists noted with regret that the pyramids left unattended were repeatedly subjected to raids by marauders. This greatly complicates the work.

However, a number of discoveries have already been made. So, inside were found mazes, part of which are the burial chambers. Some rooms are equipped with stone benches. Inside each tomb there is one large room, the purpose of which has not yet been established.

The huge stones from which the pyramids are made are covered with symbols and inscriptions. Scientists have yet to decipher them. Researchers note that the architecture of the Jeddar is unique. However, their main distinguishing feature is the period of construction.

A new study should test the hypothesis that the pyramids were built for the burial of Berber kings. Archaeological evidence of this has not yet been found.

By the way, according to the results of the study, documents will be prepared for inclusion of Jeddars in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
