First delivery attempts by drones

DHL Express, the world leader in international logistics and express delivery, and EHang, a leading global manufacturer of unmanned aerial vehicles, have entered into an agreement on strategic partnership. Collaboration involves the joint launch of a fully automated, programmable delivery solution with drones, which will solve the current delivery problem for the “last mile” in urban areas of China.

“Our partnership with EHang and the launch of a new, fully automated delivery solution for drones is truly a landmark event. The logistics industry is going through a very interesting period: cross-border trade continues to grow, as does the Chinese economy, especially in the South China region and the Pearl River Delta, where many start-ups and small businesses operate. Consequently, the demand for logistics services is growing, which in turn opens up opportunities for introducing innovative and environmentally friendly solutions that can support economic growth with greater efficiency at lower costs, ”said Wu Dongming, CEO of DHL Express China.

The newest drone delivered the first cargo to a DHL customer in Guangzhou. For this purpose, a new route with a length of about 8 km from the DHL service center located in Liaobu, Dongguan city district in Guangdong province, to the destination has been specially developed. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) of the new generation from the Falcon series of production EHang is characterized by full automation, high level of intelligence, safety and reliability. New delivery method allows to solve the problem of difficult road conditions and traffic jams, typical for urban areas of the country. The UAV route takes only 8 minutes, while the car travels this way in 40 minutes. Delivery costs are reduced by 80%, while energy consumption and carbon footprint are significantly reduced compared to road transport.

The founder and CEO of EHang, Hu Huaqi, said: “We are delighted to launch the first UAV delivery route in Guangzhou, China, together with DHL. This event marks the beginning of a new phase in the logistics of smart cities. Given our successful launch, we can expect that the delivery by drones as an innovative logistic solution will be increasingly in demand in different parts of the country. ”

The EHang's smart Falcon series drone has eight propellers on four wings, several backup systems with multiple redundancy and a programmable, reliable flight control unit. This drone is distinguished by high performance: vertical take-off, perfect accuracy of GPS navigation and visual identification, “smart” planning of the flight route, a fully automated flight process, as well as network connectivity and real-time flight control. Being a fully automated intelligent solution, the drone can deliver loads weighing up to 5 kg, taking off and landing on intelligent control panels specially designed for autonomous loading and unloading. The control panels are connected to the automatic processes of sorting, scanning and storing express mail, and also have functions such as face recognition and identity card scanning.

Innovative delivery solution by drones will help expand the operational capabilities of DHL and create a new customer experience in the field of logistics. Based on the experience of successfully launching the first fully automated intelligent solution for delivering drones in China, DHL plans to continue to search for new routes and develop them for customers who need specialized logistics solutions, as well as with EHang to begin work on creating second-generation drone for further optimization operational processes and efficient express delivery by drones.
