Disruption of the International Assembly of Orthodoxy in Tbilisi

Disruption by the radicals of the meeting of the International Assembly of Orthodoxy (MAP) in Tbilisi is a premeditated action to complicate relations with Russia. This was stated by the head of the State Duma Committee on the Development of Civil Society, Issues of Public and Religious Associations, the President of the IAO Sergei Gavrilov.
On the eve, the participation of Gavrilov and other delegates from Russia in the 26th session of the General Assembly of the IAO turned into a scandal. The president of the organization opened the meeting session in the building of the Georgian parliament, sitting in the chair of the parliamentary speaker. This caused outrage among the radicals. Representatives of the opposition picketed the podium and chair of the speaker of parliament in protest, not giving the opportunity to continue the work of the General Assembly. Later it was decided to complete it and leave the Russian delegation. These events became a pretext for the rally: several thousand demonstrators gathered outside the parliament building in central Tbilisi, demanding the resignation of the head of the Interior Ministry and the chairman of the parliament. During the protests, more than 70 people were injured.
Gavrilov himself called the speeches of the radicals in Tbilisi an attempt to complicate relations between Russia and Georgia. “Our relations in culture, economy, and tourism are developing well. And many people don’t like it,” he said.

The parliamentarian also believes that a blow was struck at the image of Georgia as a hospitable country. “Georgia invited us, gave written guarantees of security,” Gavrilov stressed. “Georgians never invite a guest, attack him or threaten to kill him.”

The head of the IAO also noted that one of the goals of the protesters was to discredit Orthodoxy in Georgia. The action was managed, including by English-speaking instructors, Gavrilov specified. According to him, the protesters were prepared in advance posters, "chants", and the meeting of the Assembly was only a reason to start performances.
