Behind the wheel is dangerous

The profile commission of the lower house of the Italian parliament approved a number of “revolutionary” amendments to the road code aimed at improving road safety. Deputies toughened the punishment for abuse of the phone while driving, as well as for the unfastened seat belt.

According to the latest report “Road Safety”, prepared by the Dekra Association, 90 percent of accidents are caused by “bad habits”, among which the leading position is taken by using a mobile phone to make a call, write SMS or post on social networks. Continuing the abuse of mobile or other means of communication that distracts the driver’s attention from the road will be punished with a deprivation of rights for a period of seven days to two months from the moment of the first offense. A number of specialized sites also explains that the habit of talking and chatting behind the wheel will cost the owners of vehicles a lot of money. For such negligence it is planned to introduce a fine of up to 2.5 thousand euros.
The driver will also be responsible for the unfastened passenger. For such an offense will now be fined both mandatory. Similar sanctions will be applied to owners of motorcycles and scooters, which are often neglected safety rules regarding the wearing of a helmet. Due to the increasing number of accidents, the helmet will also be obliged to wear cyclists who are under 12 years of age.

At the same time, parliamentarians decided to defend several, the most "vulnerable" categories of the population. In particular, local authorities will be given the opportunity to establish special "pink" parking zones, which pregnant women and families with children up to two years old will be able to use for free. And for people with disabilities free parking can continue to be available on ordinary places, while at the same time, the penalty for drivers holding special designated places for disabled people will be doubled.

It is expected that the amendments, which in the next few weeks will be approved by both chambers of the Italian Parliament, will enter into force by September 1.
