Shortened Work Week Idea

The transition to a four-day working week is not a short-term issue, and it does not need to be taken literally, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said. And most importantly - such a step should not reduce the salaries of people.
The Prime Minister discussed current trends in labor relations with the head of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Employers (RSPP) Alexander Shokhin. Medvedev announced a theoretical reduction in the working week to four days in June, speaking at a session of the International Labor Conference in Geneva.
“Following the results of this session, as well as the discussion that exists in expert circles, I instructed the ministries to work out these issues related to the regulation of processes in the labor sector,” he said. - And I would ask you, as the leader of our largest employers' association, to also join this work, especially since it is directly related to the position taken by the employers themselves.

Once, the prime minister recalled, people worked six days a week. A five-day workweek is now considered the norm. "But society is developing, technology does not stand still. That is why these issues appear on the agenda," the head of the Cabinet emphasized.

- Obviously, we also need to think about changes in the labor legislation for the future, bearing in mind various forms of labor regulation, including the so-called remote work and flexible work schedule, as well as, in the future, maybe a transition to a four-day work week, - Medvedev said at a meeting with the head of the RSPP.
However, this discussion should take into account a number of nuances. Firstly, one cannot understand it too literally now. “This, of course, is not this second,” said the prime minister.

Secondly, it is necessary to take into account the interests of both workers and employers. “This should be accompanied by an increase in labor productivity, on the one hand, when it comes to a full-fledged work week, and, of course, the preservation of the salary that is available, and not by a decrease or in some other way so that they are treated,” Dmitry said. Medvedev.

“If we talk about a change in regulation, then these changes should be flexible - someone wants to work more, someone wants to work less, but with the understanding that, naturally, the wage system that was originally provided for in the labor contract is maintained,” - remarked the head of government. Such opportunities should simply be provided for by labor law, he added.
